The ‘Safety Mom Series’ stems from a long time interest in narrative quilts. My glass process is very similar to needlework in it's repetition, detail, and femininity. As a young woman I made chicken self portraits, so it was no surprise that I grew up to be a Safety Mom. It has been with anger and dismay that I've watched my nation become seduced by the idea of a safety blanket. There is a popular children's story that tells of quilts being used to guide slaves in the underground railroad. These pieces are based on those quilts. I am mindful of this story as I chose my skeleton keys, bleeding hearts, and edited alphabet. My greatest wish is to be wrong about the world my children will inherit, but I glued the final keys in place on "Homeland" as I watched New Orleans drown. | ||
