PILCHUCK GLASS SCHOOL SESSION FIVE

August 16 - 27, 2010

Piece by Piece  the challenge of this class will be to break down visual ideas into their smallest components in order to build a larger element, form, or structure using glass and flameworking techniques. Students should come inspired with images, ideas, and models that draw upon sources other than contemporary glass works. The course will thoroughly cover the basics: bending,  fusing, simple sculpting, color application, annealing, and design as well as discuss when it is more appropriate to use adhesives instead of hot-fusing. A range of glasses will be introduced, beginning with borosilicate and moving on to soft glasses such as Bullseye and furnace pulled cane. There will be a lot of drawing and working out ideas in quick glass sketches. Students will focus their efforts on a well-conceived final design, with the understanding that the value of the course lies not in the finished product but in what they learn along the way.

June 27 - July 24, 2008 - Women's Glass Invitational - Dane Gallery - Nantucket, MA

The Mint Museum of Craft + Design is pleased to announce our upcoming exhibition Masters of Disguise on view March 22 through July 20, 2008. The selection of works on display illustrates the exceptional quality, innovation and diversity prevalent within the museum’s permanent collection. Masters of Disguise addresses not only man's relationship with self-transformation, but also examines disguised forms, materials and environments.  The 74 works, primarily from The Mint Museum's permanent collection, provide a fresh look at a variety of objects that skillfully illustrate the power of concealment.  The included pieces range from a Mayan chocolate vessel featuring an ancient masked ruler to contemporary trompe l'oeil sculpture by artists such as Marilyn Levine and Richard Shaw. Kari Russell-Pool's "Dancing Pear Bottle" is included in Masters of Disguise.
